Overview:

Tsavo East National Park is one of Kenya’s largest and most iconic safari destinations, covering over 13,000 square kilometers. Just a few hours’ drive from the coastal towns of Mombasa and Diani, it is the perfect option for travelers who want to blend a beach holiday with a taste of Kenya’s wild side.

The park is world-famous for its vast landscapes, dramatic red-dust elephants, and diverse wildlife that roam its open savannahs, seasonal rivers, and rocky outcrops.
Home to lions, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, leopards, cheetahs, hippos, crocodiles, and over 500 bird species, Tsavo East offers an authentic safari experience within a single day. With its sweeping plains, the Galana River, and water catchments like Aruba Dam that attract large herds of animals, this park is a wildlife photographer’s dream.

Itinerary

Early Morning: Pick-up & Drive to Tsavo Eas

Your adventure begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Mombasa or Diani. Driving inland, you’ll pass through Kenya’s scenic coastal hinterland, where the landscapes gradually change from palm-fringed villages and sisal plantations to dry acacia scrubland as you approach Tsavo.

Morning: Safari Game Drive in Tsavo East

Upon arrival at the park, you will enter through one of the main gates—Buchuma or Voi Gate—and immediately begin your game drive. The park’s immense open plains provide excellent visibility, making it easy to spot wildlife. Herds of elephants, often covered in a coat of red dust from the soil, are among the park’s most striking sights. With luck, you may also encounter prides of lions, cheetahs resting under acacia trees, graceful giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and countless bird species.
Your experienced driver-guide will take you through different habitats, from open savannahs dotted with termite mounds to the lush vegetation near seasonal rivers. Along the way, you’ll stop at key viewing points for photography and to enjoy the magnificent scenery.

Midday: Picnic or Lodge Lunch

Around midday, you will pause for lunch—either a picnic meal inside the park or a buffet-style lunch at one of the comfortable safari lodges. This is a chance to relax, enjoy the surroundings, and watch wildlife that may wander close to the lodge waterholes

Afternoon: Continued Game Drive & Scenic Highlight

In the afternoon, continue exploring Tsavo East with more game drives. As the sun gets hotter, many animals gather near water sources like Aruba Dam, one of the park’s most famouswildlife-viewing spots. This man-made reservoir attracts elephants, buffalo, hippos, and a variety of waterbirds, creating excellent opportunities for close-up sightings. The Galana River, with its lush greenery and occasional crocodiles basking along the banks, is another highlight.

Evening: Return to the Coast

Later in the afternoon, you will exit the park and begin your return drive to Mombasa or Diani. Arriving by early evening, you’ll be dropped back at your hotel, marking the end of an action-packed safari day filled with incredible wildlife encounters and stunning scenery
