Overview:

The Aberdare National Park is a high-altitude wilderness located in central Kenya, covering steep forested ravines, rolling moorlands, and spectacular waterfalls. Rising from 2,000 to over 4,000 meters above sea level, the park offers a refreshing contrast to the savannah landscapes of other parks, with its cool mountain climate and lush greenery. Wildlife here thrives in dense forests and open moorlands, with opportunities to spot elephants, buffaloes, leopards, giant forest hogs, bushbucks, hyenas, and the elusive bongo antelope, which is rarely seen elsewhere in Kenya. The park is also a paradise for bird enthusiasts, hosting over 250 bird species including the crowned eagle and the endangered Aberdare cisticola.
With breathtaking scenery, dramatic ridges, and waterfalls cascading down forested slopes, Aberdare National Park provides a truly different safari experience. It is a perfect nature-filled day escape from Nairobi, combining game viewing with magnificent landscapes.

Itinerary

Morning: Nairobi – Aberdare National Park

Your journey begins with an early morning pick-up from your Nairobi hotel or residence. You’ll drive through the fertile central highlands, passing tea and coffee plantations that thrive in the region’s rich volcanic soils. On a clear day, you may also catch glimpses of Mount Kenya’s snow-capped peaks in the distance.
On arrival at Aberdare National Park, you’ll enter through one of the gates and begin your scenic game drive. The road takes you through thick bamboo forests and dense rainforests, where wildlife often hides among the trees. With some luck, you may spot elephants moving silently through the vegetation or bushbucks grazing near clearings.

Midday: Moorlands and Scenic Highlights

As you ascend higher, the vegetation changes to open moorlands dotted with giant lobelias and tussock grasses, offering a completely different ecosystem. The cooler temperatures and wide-open views create a serene atmosphere. During your exploration, you’ll make stops at scenic viewpoints and some of the park’s famous waterfalls, such as Karuru Falls, which plunge in three spectacular tiers, or Chania Falls with its picturesque setting. These stops are perfect for photography and enjoying the crisp mountain air.
A picnic lunch will be served at a designated spot inside the park, surrounded by nature’s tranquility.

Afternoon: Continued Game Drive & Return to Nairobi

After lunch, continue exploring the park in search of wildlife, including buffalo, warthogs, monkeys, and with luck, the shy and rare bongo antelope. Your guide will also highlight the park’s history and unique conservation significance, including its role as a former royal retreat and its protection of Kenya’s mountain catchment forests.
In the late afternoon, you’ll begin your return journey to Nairobi, driving back through the highland farmlands and arriving at your hotel or residence in the evening.
